Shell Homage: A Sustainable Design Revolution

Designer Rania Elkalla Transforms Egg and Nut Shells into Biodegradable Plastic

Elkalla was inspired by the beauty and strength of egg and nut shells, often discarded as waste. She saw potential in these natural resources and embarked on a journey to create a plastic alternative that would not only be functional but also environmentally friendly. The designer collaborated with material engineers and polymer specialists from the Technical University of Berlin, conducting extensive research and experimentation to develop a new eco-friendly material.

The Pebbles hangers, the first product line from Shell Homage, are not just functional but also aesthetically pleasing. They can be arranged according to individual preferences, creating various patterns that resemble precious gems on the wall. The hangers are extruded at different levels and can be partially overlapped, offering a wide range of order. The organic forms elegantly highlight the beauty of the bio-plastic used, revealing a unique texture and surface design.

The process of creating this bio-plastic involves collecting shells from various sources, cleaning them thoroughly, and combining them with other bio-adhesives. The material created represents the flow of eggshells and different nutshells embedded in transparent biodegradable resin and food pigments. The techniques used include hot press and extrusion, resulting in a 100% natural plastic that can decay after many years depending on weather conditions and size.

The Pebbles hangers are not just a design innovation but also a solution to a global problem. By transforming waste into a valuable resource, Elkalla is challenging the conventional approach to product design and setting a new standard for sustainability. The project is a testament to the power of interdisciplinary research and the potential of unconventional materials in creating products that are not only functional but also environmentally friendly.

Shell Homage has been recognized for its innovative approach and contribution to sustainable design. The project was awarded the Iron A' Furniture Accessories, Hardware and Materials Design Award in 2017, a prestigious accolade that acknowledges well-designed, practical, and innovative creations that meet professional and industrial requirements.
